Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta)

There is no pilgrim that doesn’t visit the Holy Scala Santa where the precious “ Cappella dei Papi “ “ Chapel of Pope “ is located. Also known as the Holy Sancta Sanctorum, where the image of the Most Holy Savior is venerated.
According to the traditional christian legend, in 326, Empress S. Elena requested the transportation of the stair, climbed several times by Jesus on his Judgment day, to Rome from Pretorio di Pilato in Jerusalem. That is why it is called Scala Pilati or Scala Sancta.
This Scala Sancta got its name from the 28 steps that need to be climbed on knee to honor the Passion of the Christ. And that leads to the “ Cappella dei Papi “.

Entrance is for free and doesn’t need reservation. To avail the audio guide service in the following language:

  • Italian
  • English
